CranioSacral and Sports Therapy
Kirstie Atkin complements Cambourne Dental Practice with a clinic for Sports Massage and CranioSacral Therapy.
CranioSacral therapy is a light-touch manipulative approach which is used in response to a myriad of health problems including headaches, neck and back pain, TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain), chronic fatigue, motor co-ordination difficulties, eye problems, endogenous depression, hyperactivity and central nervous system disorders. Because of its influence on many body functions, CranioSacral Therapy is used by a wide variety of healthcare professionals including osteopaths, medical doctors, physiotherapists, dentists, midwives, psychologists, massage therapists and acupuncturists.
Years of research has shown that each person has a CranioSacral System, a tadpole shaped bag which is the dural membrane whose three layers surround, protect and connect our central nervous system, bathed and nourished in its own special liquid, cerebrospinal fluid. This system moves rhythmically all the time. A CranioSacral Therapist has learnt to monitor the rhythm with his or her hands upon almost any part of a human body. Just as one can make inferences from heart rhythm and breathing activity about the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, a therapist can gather information about the condition and function of the CranioSacral Rhythm, in and on various regions and parts of the human body. When certain body parts or regions do not move rhythmically in response to the gentle urging of the CranioSacral System, a therapist is able to localise areas of trouble. A therapist can use light pressure on the bones of the skull which are joined together by flexible sutures and connected to the dura mater membrane, in order to affect the CranioSacral Hydraulic System.
CranioSacral therapy during pregnancy can help reduce discomfort and other problems through both late term and the birth itself. A few minutes spent with the newborn can resolve many of the effects of foetal and birth stress, helping to ensure good development and healthy adulthood.
