Amalgam Removal
There are several reasons to replace amalgam fillings with tooth coloured biocompatible materials (composites) from cosmetic, to improve longevity or to remove mercury from your mouth. After local anaesthetic is administered, the mercury containing filling is removed rapidly with a dental drill, limiting exposure to mercury vapours. All remnants of the old filling material are removed and the area is rinsed profusely with water before a new filling is placed.
Composite fillings are bonded into place using the acid-etch technique. The surface of the tooth is etched, rinsed and dried and then a bonding agent is applied. The composite filling material is then applied in layers mimicking dentine and enamel and in various different shades. The filling is cured in layers with a dental ultraviolet light. The filling is finished and polished.
